start of 2003, for example, 3M would experience a significant reorganization ("3M Company," 2009). The reason for the new reorganization is related to an attempt to latch on to larger,
higher growth market ("3M Company," 2009). The firms largest division was separated into three units, which are Transportation, Safety Security and Protection, and Display and Graphics ("3M Company," 2009). There
had been a significant realignment of research and development operations and fourteen technology centers were closed as a result ("3M Company," 2009). The 3M company did have a goal in
mind. It is explained that the research and development references were to be used in such a way as to bring the scientists closer to the customer ("3M Company," 2009).
McNerney, it was reported, wanted to turn the industry giant into a less frightening entity ("3M Company," 2009). The author of the overview on 3M concludes in this manner: "It
was clear that 3M was changing--and in some very dramatic ways--but only the passage of time would be able to show whether the companys longstanding penchant for innovation would survive
in the new environment" ("3M Company," 2009). In examining the history of 3M, with particular attention to recent history and the challenges it faces, it appears that the company is
