which revealed a category of students who are successful in engineering undergraduate programs, which has been neglected. This population is referred to as the Non-traditional Engineering Organized (NEO) students, which
are defined as those students who lack a focused background in technology, science, math and engineering. Rationale for selecting a qualitative method and design: A qualitative design was employed for
this study in order to discern and describe the strength and weaknesses of NEO students, as compared to traditional students, in order to inform recruitment and retention strategies applicable to
this population. Degree to which the approach was appropriate and generated useful findings: The interviews conducted by the researcher were highly appropriate
to the research goals, as this provided data pertaining to the lived experience of the NEO students, exploring all aspects of students life, that is, what they considered satisfactory or
unsatisfactory in their lives and techniques they employed to feel empowered within their schools engineering education culture. In addition to semi-structured qualitative interviews, McLoughlin also used ethnographic participant-observations. Collectively, this
data provided an in-depth description of the student perspectives on their engineering education thus far within the course of an undergraduate program. The evaluation process for the study also included
information provided by interviews with administrator and faculty. The researcher uses the findings of this study to formulate suggestions for both recruitment and retention strategies that are applicable to
NEO students. This discussion encompasses the implications that this research has for engineering education in general. As this indicates, this qualitative data is highly useful and appropriate to this purpose
because it informs policymakers and administrators about the factors affecting this student population and their perspective. Conducting similar research: When addressing this
