substantive elements. The natural law school of jurisprudence, by comparison, is based in the knowledge that human beings inherently understand the concepts of right and wrong through reason; as
such, the state "is instituted to protect and not to destroy natural rights...therefore, civil society is formed to secure the natural rights endangered in the less than perfect state of
nature" (Melone et al, 2008, p. 8). Nowhere is the natural law school of jurisprudence emphasized more than within Jeffersons Declaration of Independence. However, the overall effectiveness of
his revolutionary vision of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness has still not reached the level to which he had visualized. Originally created to provide for the protection
of a persons natural rights, the ability to make his own way and to obtain contentment without the infringement of government or any other oppressive source - not the least
of which includes the law - Jeffersons vision served as the focal point of a political career many believed to be both contradictory and arbitrary. His critics notwithstanding, Jefferson
set out and ultimately accomplished what no political leader had considered important enough to do: champion the cause for the common man. Analytical
jurisprudence is founded within a philosophy of finite expressions of terms, logic and consistency that creates a very rigid approach to law (Melone et al, 2008). Infused in this
