to Carolyn Oranges book, 25 Mistakes Teachers Make and How to Avoid Making Them. Unfortunately, Ms. Orange seems to say, the mistakes that teachers make in the areas of discipline
and classroom policies can have far ranging and long term effects that can leave students permanently jaded and psychologically damaged. One of the biggest areas for concern among the 325
scenarios cited by Orange is in the area of classroom discipline. Many teachers take the approach of isolating or singling out a child for inappropriate behavior. However, Orange would seem
to state, this very isolationism has done two things and none of which was intended. One, the student has received the attention he/she was seeking so the behavior was rewarded
by the attention(albeit a negative attention) and secondly, this action separates him from his classmates in a way that can cause damage to self image and only increases the students
need to seek attention and validation. Another source of contention among those teachers having problems in their classroom was the notion of using public humiliation as a way to curb
problems. Public humiliation, such as standing in a corner, placing ones nose in a circle on the board, or allowing other students to jeer or laugh at a student only
serves to create a hostile environment for the student, breeds contempt for learning, and can build up a level of frustration within the child that may one day, Orange seems
