of Fine Arts in Houston. Discussion The first work is entitled Ju?rez/El Paso (Boxcar) and is by James Drake. It was done during the period 1986-88 and is a large
work, measuring 69 x 110 x 30 in. (Drake). The drawing is "charcoal on paper mounted on steel frame with mixed media (coal, railroad spikes, crowbar)" (Drake). The drawing itself
is mounted on the wall and underneath it, a pile of coal with railroad spike and a crowbar is heaped on the floor. The first reaction one might have
is that its a depiction of the railroad cars used to transport the Jews to concentration camps throughout Europe, and the coal on the floor represents the human ashes from
the ovens. But looking at the title means that the viewer has to rethink the impression, to another group of oppressed people: the Mexicans who are risking their lives to
cross the border between Ju?rez, Mexico and El Paso, Texas. While we may disapprove of the people who try to enter the country illegally, there can be no doubt of
the courage that they display in trying to get here: in many cases, they are found dead in the deserts that stretch along both sides of the border throughout the
Southwest. Here, the boxcar is a solid black shape that fills almost the entire area of the painting. It is rectangular, uncompromising, not at all welcoming. It looks as if
it could move on its own and swallow up anyone who gets in its way. It is a symbol of both the freedom that can be possible for those who
get through to the U.S., and of the oppression and danger they experience, both on the journey and once they are here. Its a disturbing and memorable work. The second
