For example, Scott Brown didnt win the late Edward Kennedys senatorial seat in Massachusetts because opponent Margaret Coakley ran a clueless campaign. According to the politicos and pundits, the more
appealing Brown won the election as a referendum against President Barack Obama and the Democrat-majority Congress. Its this tendency to makes every local election about national issues that makes us
say that we are witnessing the start of a national tide for the 2010 elections. But what, exactly, is meant by a national
tide? In its most basic form, a national tide refers to the tendency and inclination to focus on national issues, rather than local concerns, in an election campaign (Barrons AP
US Government Prep Book, 2009). Basically, one sign of a national tide is how the candidate on the ballot reacts to the partys leader.
Cook (2009) wrote last summer that "absent any national tide," the Democrats will likely lose a handful of seats in the House, while picking up a seat or
two in the Senate. Cook, however, wrote his column when the bloom was still somewhat on the Obama rose, and before people began becoming more tired of unemployment figures creeping
upward and jobless rates heading down. Blogger Paul Ogden, in his comments about the Brown-Coakley election pointed out that, despite Obamas race
