represents a milestone in the troubled history of race relations in the United States. This paper compares the coverage on Fox and MSNBC, and other observations of interest from the
election night coverage. Discussion Fox is generally regarded as the "mouthpiece" of the Republican Party and its claim of providing "fair and balanced" coverage is in dispute. On election night,
however, there was no partisan bickering. Instead, in one segment, Will Thomas discussed the technology that was in use, including the live news cameras showing the crowds gathering in Grant
Park to greet Obama; and the crowd in Phoenix to see McCain; Thomas saw a reporter who was waiting to interview a woman in a McCain dress. He also looked
at some of the comments coming up on Twitter, the system that allows people to post very brief comments to one another in real time. Twitter is an Instant Message
system, except that there is a strict limit on the length of the message. Thomas then conducted a very brief interview with David Almacy, who was formerly President Bushs White
House Internet and Communications Director, and is currently Vice President at Wagner Edstrom Worldwide, which is Microsofts public relations firm. Thomas asked Almacy who had used the Internet more effectively
and why. Almacy believes that both candidates had done a good job using the electronic medium, but Obama was much better than McCain. In particular he noted that Barack Obama
got onto the Net early, created "barackobama.com" and recruited a great many supporters that way. He is simply more "savvy" about the Internet than McCain. In a comment that truly
reflects the times in which we live, Thomas said that Almacy would be blogging and tweeting all night long. The second Fox segment was of the crowd in Grant Park,
