campaign or at least not one of the focus issues, the predominant issue is always the economic status of the nation (Plate, 2004). While Vietnam became a strategic issue in
the 1960s, the foreign policy issues brought up this time is far more complex (Plate, 2004). This time, the war is at our door front, the attack was on
American soil (Plate, 2004). The issue has to do with how safe we are on our own homeland (Plate, 2004). Plate also observed that when terrorists strikes at home, "the
global becomes the local in the snap of a terror attack" (2004). The Democrats are using the war in Iraq as a strategic weapon in its fight to overcome President
Bush (Plate, 2004). Plate points out that if this election did not have the war in Iraq to use in campaigning, President Bush would be overwhelmingly re-elected (Plate, 2004). Another
strategy the Republicans are using is to allege President Bush is not popular overseas but that is not at all true (Plate, 2004). The Republican campaign is using
the success of the attacks in Afghanistan, the capture or killing of terrorists throughout the world, and the capture of Sadam Hussein and many of his henchmen. The Presidents campaign
has also pointed to the strides in Medicare prescription coverage. The basic strategies are attack and counter-attack. If anyone closely watched the campaign spots on television, they will realize
that the Bush/Cheney did not begin the campaign with any negative comments about Kerry. It was the Democrats that began the negative campaigning. It was after that that the Republican
