him "Stay in your seat," which causes a distraction to the teacher and the class and disrupts the flow of the lesson being given. Dr. Jones discusses several strategies
that can be used for coping with this scenario, one of which is to create an individualized incentive program. The first step is to pinpoint the problem, that is, the
behavior(s) that the teacher wants to change. The second step is to pinpoint the childs behavioral assets. In this case, the teacher would observe if there are any times throughout
the day when this student does stay in his seat, noticing also the conditions and circumstances of those times. The majority of successful behavior management systems "focus on maximizing assets"
(Jones "Chapter 13"). The third step in this intervention is for the teacher to record the number of times the students gets out of his seat, noting precipitating conditions when
possible. "You cannot assess improvement unless you have some notion of the rate of target behaviors...before and following intervention" (Jones "Chapter 13"). The fourth step is to pinpoint critical reinforcers
of the behavior, which are "anything that anyone will work for" (Jones "Chapter 13"). Simply getting a reprimand from the teacher can be a reinforcer of the behavior. Getting out
of his seat. The fifth step is the intervention itself and the sixth and final step is to adjust the intervention parameters if a sufficient degree of change is not
accomplished. Dr. Jones also discusses the possibility of using extinction as a strategy, which is basically to ignore the behavior, which draws on research from the 1960s in which the
