that poverty exists because of dichotomies between the industrialized nations and the developing nations. In other words, that poverty results because of Third World countries "not keeping up," so to speak. Shiva then takes exception to the way in which poverty is defined, arguing that when sustenance farmers have what they need, in terms of clean, free water, etc., their quality of life is high. Her ultimate point is that the global poor are poor because of intrusion by the West and industrialized concerns. The assignment seems to indicate that only one article should be comprehensively reviewed. The writer/tutor chose Stossels article. John Stossel begins his article by taking exception to the idea that the planet earth and the human race are in "imminent danger." His position is that this attitude is absurd and he cites John Semmens of the Laissez Faire Institute to back up his argument. Semmens argues that science and technology are currently improving the environment and he cites how areas that were clear-cut of all their trees have been replanted and how farmers today use science to make efficient use of land, which results in increased food production. Stossel argues that the idea that the U.S. and the developed world are addicted to oil is erroneous and how one looks on oil is all a matter of perspective. At one time, i.e., prior to when science discovered that oil cold be useful, oil was regarded as a nuisance. It became valuable only because of technological innovation. Likewise, Stossel has absolute confidence that as long as the price of oil stays high, there will be motivation to find alternative sources of energy, so these sources will be found.
