beginning of her book records her observations from her original study, which was conducted in the 1950s. In this era, Thomas describes how contact with Bushmen was difficult because the
Bushmen actively avoided it. If they realized that a Westerner was coming to their village, they simply abandoned it till the intruders left. As this suggests, the value of participation
observation in Thomass work is that by living with the Bushmen, Thomas and her colleagues earned their trust and therefore, were able to observe and get to know these
fascinating people. For example, prior to a trip to gather hone from the Gautscha baobab tree, Thomas describes how she sat with a Bushman friend, Toma, who told
her "stories of people who thought that they could climb baobab trees but whose self-confidence had been excessive, because they had fallen, each and every one" (Thomas 253). As this
one detail suggests, learning about a culture from the inside out means establishing intimate friendship with the people. This enables ethnographers, such as Thomas, to observe a culture in detail.
This was particularly significant in Thomass case, as the lifestyle she observed in the late 1950s totally changed in ensuing decades as the Kalihari was increasing invaded by South
African societal influences. For instance, as farmers bought land, they cut off access Bushmens to natural waterholes, displaying attitudes of disdain, which were "almost identical to the attitude most people
of all nations display toward animals," as displacing "an animal hardly merits anyones slightest consideration" (Thomas 266). As this indicates, the follow-up research that Thomas conducted in the 1980s adds
