A 3 page essay that looks at two chilling visions of life in a fascist state. In George Orwell's chilling novel 1984, he describes life in England under totalitarian rule, where the elite rule with authoritarian control and Big Brother, as a symbol of the state, watches and keeps track of every detail of citizens' personal lives. In her 2004 novel, America 2014, An Orwellian Tale, Dawn Blair proposes that a similar transformation takes over the United States. The premise of Blair's text is that, with the rationalization that authoritarianism is justified by the war on terrorism, America will exchange its freedoms for the illusion of security and become a one-party, totalitarian state. The writer briefly looks at both novels and then discusses whether or not the US is endanger of becoming totalitarian. Citing a recent article, the writer feels that this is a real threat and that Orwell and Blair's books should be considered as accurate warnings. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

and become a one-party, totalitarian state. In both novels, the mechanisms of domination are centered on the use of language and well as through electronic surveillance. The government in
1984 is intent on simplifying the language into a basic form of English that Orwell calls "Newspeak," which robs language of much of its connotation and nuance. Because Newspeak takes
away all words that are necessary for rational discussion, the state reasons that political unorthodoxy becomes difficult, if no impossible. Similarly, Blair also pictures the states manipulation of language as
crucial its hold on power, as the country as been renamed "Gods United States" (Blair 1) and it has become illegal to say anything derogatory about the government. In both
works, the protagonist is named "Winston Smith" and this character is a typical state flunky. Orwells Winston is to use Newspeak to generate propaganda for the government. Blairs Winston is
ironically producing a version of 1984 that runs afoul of government censors. Orwells 1984 has served as a frightening reminder of how easily hard-won freedoms can evaporate when
people become complacent about guarding them. Likewise, Blairs vision of the future has a similar message. With thinly disguised names of current-day American leaders, Blair suggests that the US will
become a fascist state as a result of actions such as the Patriot Act and other trends that diminish rights in the name of Homeland Security. While this scenario will
