1990s, examining just one event of each decade and analyzing that event, or element, as it involved social, economic and political influence and/or change. 1950s
The 1950s was a time of interesting simplicity in many ways, especially when compared to present day conditions. But, one of the most important elements or
events of this decade was McCarthyism. McCarthyism was the result of fears that were growing concerning communism and the Soviet Union. It was very much something of a witch hunt
in the United States and it was something built largely on fear that had been growing since the end of the Second World War. With the end of WWII
things all around the world were in a state of reconstruction in many ways as people adjusted to a relatively new world set along particular political lines. In the case
of the United States and the Soviet Union tensions grew and this urged many people to fear communism. This fear was fed by politicians and people who were, themselves, convinced
that communism could destroy the United States if allowed to get into the nation. While there were many who were fearful of this possible reality, it was McCarthy, Senator Joe
McCarthy who really set the ball rolling. And it was the House of Un-American Activities Committee that would essentially put people on trial, examining and questioning them for their involvement,
