silent film filled with images that are horrific and although simple, quite dramatic. The following paper analyzes the film as it involves elements such as lighting, costuming, characters and camera work. The Hunchback of Notre Dame There are several characters in this particular film, with the most notable being Quasimodo, Esmerelda and Jehan. In terms of Lon Chaneys character, Quasimodo, this is the film that really gave him a name, illustrating the powerful nature of his character. And, this character, or the success of the character, was further enhanced by the makeup and costume he wore. "The Hunchback of Notre Dame became one of the biggest hits of the silent era for Universal, probably in large part because...Chaneys extensive makeup" (Bowen). One of the reasons why the makeup of Quasimodo was so impressive is that Lon Chaney "devised that memorable makeup himself" (The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923)). In addition, the costume that he wore weighed as much as 70 pounds and yet Lon Chaney was still capable of climbing and doing amazing feats, feats that would likely prove difficult without a weighty costume (The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923)). The costuming of Esmerelda and Jehan were, obviously, not as impressive or even memorable, but their characters were quite memorable. Jehan is an evil man who desires Esmerelda, like most of the men in the story, and Esmerelda is a very helpless gypsy woman who embodies all that is beautiful, desirable, and vulnerable. These three very different characters serve as the foundation of the story and also serve to show the successful nature of the film.
