took place in Spain. And, one of the areas it influenced was that of theater and drama. The following paper examines the Spains Golden Age of theater during the 17th
century. Theater in Spain Prior to and after the Golden Age of Spain the theater was dominated by religious forces. But, during the Golden Age there was a break
from religious focus and a focus on people and politics and the divine rights of kings. It was, as such, clearly a Golden Age for Spain in many ways. In
best understanding the theater of the time, theater that was greatly influenced in costume design and setting by the Renaissance theater of the time, we look at the two playwrights
of the time. The first playwright is Lope de Vega. This playwright was "born two years before Shakespeare, in the family of a poverty-stricken nobleman, and lived to be
seventy-three years old, devoting most of his mature life to the writing of poetry and drama" (National Drama: Spain to 1700, 2004). He was incredibly popular and famous in his
time, often having a group of people following him around every time he left his home (National Drama: Spain to 1700, 2004). In relationship to the subject matter of
his numerous plays we see that they are love stories, farces, depictions of society, adventures, "moralizing pieces, tragedies, and sacred plays" (National Drama: Spain to 1700, 2004). Generally the plays
of the time, and the plays of this man, were categorized into four different classes. One was the dramas of the cloak and sword which were gallant and possessed adventure
