by K. Von Huben 10/2010 Please Introduction 12 Angry Men is a brilliant 1957 film about the way in which a
jury debates the evidence it has just seen presented in a murder trial. This paper reviews the film as well as discussing the group dynamics that occur within the jury.
Discussion Group dynamics is fascinating, and not terribly obscure. Almost anyone can understand that such a thing occurs, even if they dont know precisely what the terms are. That is,
we can look at a group and after some short period of time, know who the leader is, who the conciliator is-the person who goes along to get along-who the
"class clown" is and so on. The group can be any size for these dynamics to occur; in this case, it happens to be 12 men in a jury room.
The film is shot on one set, a jury room that is hot and claustrophobic. In such an atmosphere, it takes real courage to stand up to someone who is
disagreeable, but thats precisely what happens. To recap the film briefly: a young Latino/Hispanic male is on trial for killing his father, and the jury retires to deliberate his guilt
or innocence (Dirks, 2010). It seems to be an open and shut case and the assumption is that they will vote for conviction, but one juror holds out; hes not
sure that the boy is innocent, merely that he cannot say he is free from all reasonable doubt (Dirks, 2010). That is of course the basis of our legal system:
