First Corinthians is St. Pauls letter to the city of Corinth, written in about 55 AD. It was a relatively new "church" and disturbing events, specifically moral irregularities, had reached Pauls ears (NIV, 1 Corinthians Introduction, 1984). He wrote this letter to clarify his previous instructions and to urge immediate and drastic actions be taken to correct the moral laxness (NIV, 1 Corinthians Introduction, 1984). These messages are found in Chapters 1 - 10 (NIV, 1 Corinthians Introduction, 1984). Beginning in Chapter 11, St. Paul focuses on the abuse of the Lords Supper and finally, St. Paul addresses the resurrection and charity to the poor (NIV, 1 Corinthians Introduction, 1984). 1 Corinthians 11:23 - "For I have received from the Lord what I also passed on to you; The Lord Jesus on the night he was betrayed, took bread" Here, Paul is telling the people there is a divine authority on the use of the Lords Supper (Gill, 2001). Christ Himself gave the words and actions to use in remembrance of Him and a declaration of the suffering and death Christ suffered (Gill, 2001).
