is sandwiched between a lot of rhetoric denoting happy childhood memories of his taking a long train ride, of his mother sewing, and of ordinary play with other children. Just
as everyone gets taunted at school, so would the narrator and some of the other black boys. They were called niggers and were beat up. When the narrator relayed an
incident of this type to his mother, he parodied what he heard and refereed to a black boy as a nigger. He used the "N" word unknowingly. After all, he
was just a boy and did not realize what a negative connotation it would have. His mother sharply corrected him and he could not remember her taking this tone with
him before. It troubled him. She told him not to bother the colored boys, as if he were white. In fact, up until a later incident, he had passed. There
are some black and mulatto people who appear to be white, but are technically either black or mixed in terms of race. This novel is about a boy who thought
he was white growing up and after moving north, learned that there was a difference between black and white people. He learned about prejudice first hand, and when a teacher
separated the white and black children, he would go with the white. She corrected him. He was not passing. It was a shock to him and while he knew his
mother was black, as he seemingly observed her skin for the first time, he did not know who his father was. The novel begins quite abruptly and takes the reader
on a journey through the early days of the twentieth century. Things were quite different then. The novel unfolds and sees this man grow up and he still is able
