the euro has not fared as well as expected. An overview of the Eurosystem is provided along with information about monetary policy. The issue of fiscal policy is addressed as
well. The paper concludes that at this point in time, world political and economic changes must be carefully watched, but fiscal policy should be reconsidered along with a
change towards greater transparency. I. Introduction The official announcement of the Eurosystem in 1998 was exciting indeed. Later,
more and more people had become aware of the existence of the euro ("Euro: Public" 228). And it was well accepted, but the nuts and bolts of the process involved
a great deal of decision making on the part of members and other European countries. Britain is still not on board, and while that is the case, there are a
number of European countries enjoying the new currency, at least to an extent. The euro has not performed as well as predicted, but one must also consider macroeconomic factors. In
any event, on January 11, 1999, eleven EU countries did officially become the European Monetary Union (Miller 50). Obviously, not every country jumped on the single currency bandwagon. Germany was
very resistant but finally joined (Bevan 8). However, Britain, Denmark and Sweden have been rather stubborn ("Why the politics" PG). Switzerland, Norway and Iceland had not joined either
(McRae 4). The United Kingdom, is generally not pleased and in mid-1998, a majority of 58% of UK citizens were dead set against the idea of relinquishing the Pound Sterling
