social problem in the U.S. Discussion The word "typification" here means to classify things by type; "the act of representing by a type or symbol" (Typification). In this context, a statement might be made that "Poverty is a social problem." This reduces poverty from a complex problem affecting millions to a single concept. Best says that the "typification of contemporary social problems is based in constructionist theory, which describes and analyzes social problems as emerging through the efforts of claims-makers who bring issues to public attention" (Best,1989). The claims made with regard to various issues "typify the problem"; in turn, these typifications influence the way the public, legislators and others respond to the problems (Best, 1989). Its clear that the way people respond to poverty will be influenced by the way it is presented to them. For instance, if poverty is typified as being the "fault" of the poor (the blame the victim thinking), then it will garner little sympathy and support for finding solutions to the problem will be lacking. But if it is typified as a social problem that can affect anyone, given the right circumstances, efforts to combat poverty are much more likely to have wide-spread support. An article from the NASW website discusses poverty and argues that it is about "much more than money alone" (Poverty, 2009). Poverty is the result of a number of factors including "political, social, and economic dynamics" (Poverty, 2009). For example, as the country has moved from a manufacturing economy to a service economy, "wages have been dramatically lowered for the average nonprofessional worker" (Poverty, 2009). In addition to this, poverty affects a disproportionate number of women, a phenomenon that has been called the "feminization of poverty."
