is ill. At the same time, in the culture, there is a great deal of attention to surroundings and photographs and paintings. Pictures, postcards and birthday cards all can provide
delightful images likely to put a smile on anyones face. One can imagine that an individual who is lying in a hospital bed is cheered by comfortable and aesthetically pleasing
surroundings. The American Art Therapy Association (AATA) contends that "the creative process involved in the making of art is healing and life enhancing" ("American," 2003, p.PG). An example of
how art therapy can heal comes in the form of a program called Light in the Labyrinth; it is carefully constructed art therapy that provides hope for people with mental
confusion and disorientation that comes with Alzheimers disease (Sandrick, 1996). Alzheimers is a debilitating condition that affects long term memory. Towards the end of the disease process, some patients
do not remember who their own family members are. Hence, art or photography therapy can aid in at least the enjoyment of life for victims of this disease. Light in
the Labyrinth pairs professional artists with Alzheimers patients for a period of eight weeks where individual sessions include activities such as painting with watercolors or photography (1996). This does aid
