every era. Monkey King in some way is representative of most human beings. When he finds his name and that of the other monkeys in a book, he crosses it
out in the hopes that they will all gain immortality. For the most part, Monkey is happy but then he cries and says: "But the time will come when I
shall grow old and weak. Yama, King of Death, is secretly waiting to destroy me. Is there no way by which, instead of being born again on earth, I might
live forever amongst the people of the sky?" (Cheng-en 14). Monkey begins his quest with fear. Here, Monkey is truly concerned about his own personal salvation, as well as the
fate of others. Yet, as the story goes on, there are many obstacles presented. However, this substantiates his fears and sees him overcome them. What is most remarkable is the
use of the experience of encounter in the work. As Monkey encounters negative elements in his life, he changes and through these transitions, the character grows. Fear is whittled away
and replaced by something stronger. Indeed, Monkey develops character through the ebbs and flow of life. Again, the quest is a significant one. Monkey is on a journey not just
for the sake of travel, but also to actually accomplish something great. In some way, the journey is rather egoistic. He does care about himself for the most part. He
is given a chance in heaven, but seems to do wrong while he spends time there, and this is something that creates more problems. What is interesting is that while
Monkey comes across a variety of situations, and while they are all intriguing, there are dangerous encounters. These encounters are life-threatening. What purpose do they serve other than to
