is sent to the middle of nowhere to live with his grandparents and it ends with his return after many years of discovery and experience. The narrator, Jim, is this
young man and he is a character who is strong as well as open minded. He is a man who appreciates that which is important and a man who never
really loses touch with himself or his past. The following paper briefly examines the life lesson of acceptance. From the beginning Jim has the ability to adjust and throughout his
life he is faced with people and experiences that only further strengthen his ability to adjust and accept people and life. Acceptance In the beginning of the novel
we have Jim as a 10 year old boy who is on a journey to his grandparents. Everything he sees and experiences is new to him and such a change
as he is sent into the wilderness it seems. He encounters people who are foreigners and yet he accepts it all. He is, of course, frightened and unsure, but he
possesses a strength of character that will allow him to grow stronger through his ability to accept. This is clearly established in the following lines: "I dont think I was
homesick. If we never arrived anywhere, it did not matter. Between that earth and that sky I felt erased, blotted out. I did not say my prayers that night: here,
I felt, what would be would be" (Cather Book I i). As we can see, even from this early age, he accepted the fact that what "would be would be"
a very powerful foundation for a very young boy. AS the story progresses and he develops friendships we see him accept people without making judgments. One person he meets
