history. But life expectancy is used by social scientists to evaluate the shape that a country is in as well (Rosenberg, 2006). In other words, the concept is more than
just a personal attribute. To some extent, it also is telling in respect to the shape of the world. Years ago, people died much earlier because they did not have
access to good health care and there were few cures for diseases. In fact, McClatchy (2006) explains that diseases such as Typhoid no longer kills the young, so this can
explain why death rates have gone down considerably. While it is true that people live longer today than they had in the past, that does not mean that
in the future they will live to be 150. It is true that a handful of people exceed the 100 year mark by ten years or more, something unheard of
years ago. Still, McClatchy (2006) suggests that despite some health advocates who claim people can live well past 100, experts feel that human beings are approaching a biological ceiling on
old age. It is perhaps a myth that as time progresses, people are living longer. It is true that there are more diseases conquered and individuals can live beyond the
expectancy of the parts. Heart and lung transplants for example can prolong life. But by and large, life expectancy does not seem to be changing very much. While it
is popular to say that people are living longer, not all theorists agree, and some even claim the opposite trend will emerge as obesity takes its toll (McClatchy, 2006). The
