the language of news shows, he might come to the conclusion that everyone who is doing the interviewing or reporting, speaks standard English, and the majority of those being interviewed
or "talking" to the camera, are speakers of non-standard English. A re-framing of that thought might lead to the conclusion that such a format may be the networks bid
for the "everyman" viewing audience. In academic reality, the student may want to consider, that the very existence of a standard language has been called into question, however it does
seem that there are several obvious facts. First, there is a standard written form of the language, which may be seen in dictionaries and grammar books and used
for most printed matter and through most public speaking and media. Second, since this is a fluid, largely oral tradition, there is a great deal of variation within it.
Third, most arguments about what is or is not "good" English are concerned not with differentiating standard from nonstandard use, but with variations within the standard, yet variable, English
format. Fourth, as a matter of the written word, standard English chiefly concerns grammar, spelling, and word choice. Fifth, the United States is not bound by a
standard pronunciation as might be seen with in the United Kingdom. So then, the next consideration may be, what
is non-standard English? An example which the student might use to find the answer to this question may be the area of "ebonics." According to Orlando L.
