meaning, it can have different meanings for different individuals. With so many new buzzwords, one has to wonder whether it is prudent to make use of the term with todays
savvy managers. II. What is Knowledge Management? First, a student writing on this subject should define the term. What is knowledge management exactly? Knowledge management, again, is a
term that has competing definitions. One definition to come from APQC is as follows: "Systematic approaches to help information and knowledge emerge and flow to the right people at the
right time to create value" (Buckman, 2004, p. 17). Author Ikujiro Nonaka defines it this way: "Knowledge management is the tacit and explicit knowledge framework for a dynamic human process
of justifying personal belief toward the truth" (Buckman, 2004, p. 17). Another author by the name of Karl Erik Svelby says that "knowledge management is the art of creating commercial
value from intangible assets" (Buckman, 2004, p. 17). The IBM consulting group sees it as a practice that allows one to best utilize knowledge (Buckman, 2004). There are certainly other
definitions. However, one does get a sense that knowledge management may be thought of in a variety of ways. III. Conclusion The fact that knowledge management is
difficult to define provides some semblance of an argument for not using the term. When using the term with top managers, who are generally intelligent and well read, different ideas
