("Living with HIV/AIDS," 2007). For quite some time during the eighties, it seemed as if a positive HIV test was a death sentence as the ravages of AIDS suddenly became
well known. When AIDS first surfaced, people were scared. Although they heard it could only be transmitted through sexual relations, they wondered whether one could get AIDS from a swimming
pool or a toilet seat. While they kept away from people with the disease, as time went on, information surfaced to quell those fears. Or, at least, after time had
passed, it could be seen that mass epidemics were not breaking out and that when someone contracted the AIDS virus, it could be traced to either a blood transfusion, a
sexual partner, intravenous drug use or another known cause, as opposed to it being a mystery. The fact that people seem to know where they acquired the disease is comforting
as it is reasoned that if one is monogamous or celibate, they are not in a high risk group. At the beginning, there was little being done about AIDS.
In fact, the musical Rent is in partly based on the fact that the society shunned people with the disease. There were charges that people HIV did not affect the
mainstream, it was ignored. First, what is HIV exactly? HIV is the virus that causes AIDS and so, if one were to test positive, it had been presumed that ones
life was essentially over. However, today, many people live with HIV and can in fact live for a decade without developing AIDS at all (MacIntyre, 1999). This is
