many hats. It is the responsibility of the emergency services officer to respond with whatever action an emergency situation requires. If a person is injured, the emergency services officer administers
first aid. In case of fire, he or she undertakes firefighting and between emergencies, the emergency services officer acts as a security guard. As this indicates, the duty of care
for this position is extensive. "Duty of care" is generally defined as the duty to use care toward others that could be reasonable expected by the average prudent person
in order to protect other individuals from unnecessary risk of harm. For example, in a typical malpractice case, an individual suing a doctor must first show that the doctor had
a legal duty of care to that individual and then that the doctor failed in that duty causing injury to that individual. While on the job, the emergency services
officer has a duty of care to all who need assistance within his or her designated area of responsibility. This duty of care can encompass any of the skills required
by this position, that is, first aid, firefighting or in regards to security. The duty of care responsibilities that an emergency services officer should be aware of outside of his
or her field of duty is encompassed by the law of the Northern Territory of Australia, specifically the Personal Injuries (Liabilities and Damages) Act of 2003. It is obviously
not the purpose of Australian law to discourage qualified individuals from offering emergency assistance. This is why the Personal Injuries Act of 2003 specifically addresses the issue of "Good Samaritans"
