norms and research in psychology. Today, it appears that children are at the forefront of this new family model. Knowing that messy divorces had created a lost generation, todays couples
realize that divorce is a real possibility. In Australia, family law governs what couples will do, and to some extent has made a difference in family sustenance and what occurs
as a result of negotiation. The old law would not consider family violence, or the rights of fathers very much. It went more to tradition and old notions about who
should raise the children. By and large, the responsibility fell to the mother, but that is no longer the case. Todays parents are involved with the business of childrearing, even
if the couple divorces during their offsprings formative years. In respect to one piece of research on divorce, authors use longitudinal data from a study called Marital Instability Over the
Life Course (Booth, Amato, Johnson & Edwards, 1998 as cited in Wang & Amato, 2000). Authors theorize that divorce is negatively related to the loss of friends, relocation, and
decline of income amongst other things (Wang & Amato, 2000). Nine factors were used in all and "subject to a varimax rotation" (Wang & Amato, 2000, p.660). In the end,
the hypothesis is only partially supported. Authors say that their research reveals "mixed support for stress and coping theory" (Wang & Amato, 2000, p.666). They claim that stressors as named
such as losing friends and losing money are only partially implicated in the amount of stress experienced during a divorce (Wang & Amato, 2000). In the end,
