although there were some disagreements and problems. Still, it was "war free" and in a century replete with war, that was a good thing. To some extent, the 20s represented
a time of hope even though what would come would be another world war. Still, people would sit back and relax and enjoy the good economy for the most part.
Perhaps because there was no war to keep the people occupied, there were movements of temperance and virtue. Without worries about money and loss of life, people were critical of
vices such as alcohol. Yes, while the 20s were exciting, alcohol was banned much of the time. Some have called it a time of excess and because the
peoples hands were in the cookie jar, and no one was watching the money, the market would crash. It was devastating, something that would set off a new era called
the Great Depression. Prior to the 1929 crash things were fabulous, and along with the good times, as is so often the case, came skimpier clothing. Of course, clothing was
not nearly as revealing as it is today, but nevertheless, clothing seemed to be congruent with the days moods and mores. Perhaps nothing makes quite as much of a statement
as does a bathing suit, a garment made for the purpose of swimming but something that would become important to the lives of many women. Swimsuits which appeared during the
1920s were becoming a bit more risqu? but are certainly seen as old fashioned by todays standards. Everything was covered up but they simply were not as long and cumbersome
as the other styles that were present earlier at the turn of the century. And while women were showing more leg, there were still suffrage issues. Women were not treated
