and these transactions can be difficult. Dismissal is especially troubling. It means that the manager was likely tracking the behavior of the employee. It might mean that the employee simply
was not living up to expectation in terms of performance, or the action might be tied to the employees disregard for the rules. When employees arrive at work habitually late,
or call in sick rather frequently, that is often grounds for dismissal. Lawson (2001) explains that excessive lateness and tardiness disrupts work and can hinder productivity. That point is
rather obvious. Even if an employee performs well, their absence can delay projects or create a void where others have to step in and perform the function of the missing
employee. A manager of course has to be careful about letting a person go in this litigious age. Records of lateness and absences will provide documentation to prove that the
employee has not lived up to expectation. At the same time, if the employee is otherwise a good worker, there may be good reasons for the absences and lateness. A
manager should call the employee into his or her office and discuss the problem in order to try to come up with a solution. It might be that the employee
is abusing substances. If this is the case, absences and lateness would likely be accompanied by other factors such as erratic behavior, a change in disposition, and physical evidence of
drugs or alcohol. If in fact a discussion leads to a disclosure of such activity, the manager might be able to help the individual get professional help. Lateness and absences
