has become a "rich pluralist religious culture" comprising a great many different beliefs, gods and goddesses, stories, art, music, rituals and so on (Partridge 146). While Hindus accept that they
share common beliefs, most also believe that Hinduism isnt a religion so much as it is a way of life (Partridge). In fact, Hinduism is so widely varied that there
are people who dont believe its a religion at all. Because Hinduism encompasses many beliefs, it can be confusing to Westerners who are "accustomed to creeds, confessions, and carefully-worded belief
statements" ("Hindu Beliefs"). In Hinduism, a person can believe "a wide variety of things about God, the universe and the path to liberation and still be considered a Hindu" ("Hindu
Beliefs"). This open-minded attitude has made Hinduism tolerant when it comes to other faiths ("Hindu Beliefs"). However, "there are some beliefs common to nearly all forms of Hinduism that can
be identified, and these basic beliefs are generally regarded as boundaries outside of which lies either heresy or non-Hindu religion" ("Hindu Beliefs"). These are the bedrock beliefs of Hinduism, and
they include the following: "the authority of the Vedas (the oldest Indian sacred texts) and the Brahmans (priests); the existence of an enduring soul that transmigrates from one body to
another at death (reincarnation); and the law of karma that determines ones destiny both in this life and the next" ("Hindu Beliefs"). The ultimate goal of all Hindus is
what is termed release ("moksha") from the ongoing cycle of rebirth, called "samsara" ("Hindu Beliefs"). For religious people, this means "being in Gods presence, while those of a philosophical persuasion
