stage for stressful and dramatic events. The film, which is based on a factual mission, portrays two sets of dynamics, one out in space and another in Houstons ground control.
The two primary characters in leadership positions are Gene Krantz played by Ed Harris and Jim Lovell played by Tom Hanks. Each possessed a different leadership style. First, leadership
theories must be examined. Goleman (2000) outlines six types of leadership styles. One is coercive leadership, which is seen as least effective because it erodes pride, but the authoritative style
is most effective because such leaders are visionary and are able to motivate by making clear to the underlings how their part fits into a larger vision for the entire
group (2000). The affiliative leader is people orientated and the democratic style is suitable when the leader is not sure which way to go (2000). Also, the pacesetting
style, like the coercive style, is thought to be useful when used sparingly (2000). Here, the leader sets extremely high performance standards and then exemplifies those himself (2000). For
example, in a coaching situation, a leader may mandate that a cross country team run eight miles, but then he will also run with the team. Some other coaches will
tell the team what to do but not participate. The advantage of the pacesetting style is that the team members see that the coach is not asking too much of
