Rather than challenging the institution of marriage by applying marital value to same sex unions, it is more credible to simply create a separate category of gay/lesbian unions that have similar rights as those united under a marriage contract. Narration The concept of homosexuality is not a new social phenomenon and gay and lesbian unions have been noted throughout history and within the context of literary and social perspectives for centuries. No one is refuting the fact that gay and lesbian unions exist, that some of them last longer than male/female marriages, or that families can value gay/lesbian unions on the same level as male/female marriages. The challenge against gay/lesbian marriage extends from definitions of marriage, from the legal constructs supporting marriage, and from a societal view of marriage that is significantly altered by the introduction of gay/lesbian marriages. The background for opposition to gay and lesbian marriages is linked to moral, religious and political views about the legalities involved in gay marriage and the sanctioning of gay and lesbian unions. Predictably, most religious, political, and world views regarding the legality and sanctioning of gay marriage have been largely critical - condemning the notion as being everything from sacrilegious to a symptom of mental illness.
