be a hierarchy. Yet, the discussion of such is related to interpretation. Clearly, there is no set hierarchy. No one comes out and says that cartoons are not important but
drama is very important. Some genres do sink to the bottom, and some do not even make it to the first rung of the ladder. However, much goes to interpretation.
In examining network television and considering the majority of viewers, cable television is artistic, but too offensive for general viewing. There is a stigma attached to cable shows, but
there is also an elitist quality. HBO costs more than ordinary cable and so, those who watch the programming regularly may be in a higher social strata. Those in high
culture however may ignore television altogether. There is a stigma that goes with that as well. Standards are based on numerous things, inclusive of but not limited to ratings, time
of airing, network affiliation, genre and promotion. There are culture wars that exist in terms of content. Content sets the stage for issues concerning race, gender and social strata. Genre
seems to be most important of tall and determines the basic hierarchical structure. It seems to be the case that standards are not set in stone, but they are set.
One may interpret what exists and draw conclusions from there. No one sits down and creates a hierarchy. With that in mind, what is the way in which television is
