it seems that what served as great plots for classic tales, also makes for a great movie. The Matrix is a spin off of the ideas of Platos Allegory of the Cave, for example, and Apocalypse Now is patterned in part on Conrads Heart of Darkness. Now comes a modern tale about a girls pride and prejudice in the twentieth century, as Bridget Jones Diary spins familiar themes from Jane Austens novel. Bridget Fieldings novel can be said to have been directly inspired by Jane Austens book, Pride and Prejudice. There are many parallels in the construction, plot points, and the situation in which Bridge finds herself. One of the earliest hints is that the romantic leads name is Mark Darcy. Darcy, of course, is the romantic lead in Austens book. Various critics, such as Yazmin Ghonaim with the Cinephiles Film Review Magazine, have stated, "Bridget Joness Diary delivers an otherwise righteous message as the protagonist realizes that true love and happiness come after developing the ability to appreciate oneself"(Ghonaim). "What we have here are three hilarious performances embedded in a humdrum context, which is more than one can say about most romantic comedies," states Carrie Rickey for the Philadelphia Inquirer. Given this, then, there are two very different interpretations of the movies effectiveness and its cinematography. And, yet, it achieved great box office success. Apparently, the movie going public could still identify with Austens characters. Bridget Jones is thirty something and a publicist in London.
